Too many Christians are pretending to be something they're not - non-Christians! They act like the world, they dress like the world and they never talk about God. Are you one of these people? Read on to identify those Christians living on the 'down low' and learn strategies to help you improve your public walk with Jesus!
Talking about God is not the easiest thing in the world. You know how it is - you're sitting there listening to your co-workers discuss world politics, current events and the unhappiness that seems so prevalent across the United States. And in your head pops a thought 'They need Jesus.' But, do you say it? Probably not.
Why don't we talk about God?
There seem to be so many reasons. It's uncomfortable. It's unprofessional. It's inappropriate. And, let's face it - sometimes it's downright embarrassing. Here you are, a seemingly well-educated adult, still believing in the Word of God (though your non-Christian friends repeatedly tell you how untrustworthy it is because of all the re-copying and so-called editing), still believing that God created Adam and Eve (though the Big-Bang theorists can definitively tell you there is no proof of a First Cause) and still believing that you will go to heaven when you die (though your friends from other religions talk about things like reincarnation and karma). With so many different ideologies being thrown at you, what's a Christian to do?
While it is easier not to talk about God than to talk about Him, think about this: Jesus said that if we denied him, he would deny us before the Father. That's deep. And it's very serious - but it also seriously shows us how important that acknowledgement is. And, think about this - if you had a new boyfriend or girlfriend, a new car or a new gadget - wouldn't you talk about him, her or those things? As a matter of fact, it would probably be difficult to get you to stop talking about any of those things. I can't tell you how many more conversations I've had about my Ipod, my Palm Pilot, or my new clothes compared to my conversations about Jesus.
If we can talk about those other things so much, then why not God? Why not talk about the One who created us and gave us life? Why not talk about Jesus? Jesus - the one who died for our sins and endured unimaginable agony though he was totally innocent. Why not talk about the Holy Spirit? The One who is with us day in and day out, comforting us, consoling us, teaching, leading and guiding us. Yet we give them so little of our time.
It's important to Him but it's also important to your spiritual growth - so talk about God! Talk about what He has done in your life. If you need to sound intelligent, talk about how archaeological digs are beginning to uncover proof of the accuracy of the bible - verifying biblical cities, dates and rulers. If you need to bring it down to an every day level, talk about how your life has changed since you got to know Jesus. And if you need to keep it light, as least mention that you go to church! And that might just be the opening someone else needs to at least ask you about Him. Maybe - just maybe - that person found it just as uncomfortable to ask about God as you felt in talking about Him. Your conversation might be the door that leads to your friend or acquaintances getting to know Him. And becoming a Christian. And isn't that what life is all about, anyway?
Go with your comfort level, but definitely talk about God. Acknowledge the One whom you love and you will be acknowledged and loved in return. Love Him with all that you have, and always put Him first. And, from that, it will be a natural thing to mention Him, reminisce about Him and talk about Him to others. Allow God to be Lord of your life - in all things, at all times, and in all settings.
Because, simply put - He deserves it.
